Our Big Walk for Little Kids: Why this matters to me
This year, myself, family and friends are taking part in Camp Quality’s Big Walk for Little Kids, and I’m walking with a purpose that sits deeply in my chest.
I’m walking for my Uncle Rob — my beautiful uncle who has just passed away after a three‑year battle with colorectal cancer. Watching someone you love fight so hard changes you. It shifts the way you see illness, resilience, and the preciousness of health. His strength, his faith, and his courage will carry me through every step of this walk.
But I’m also walking for every child who deserves the chance to live a healthy, happy life — the kind of life we often take for granted.
Working as a paediatric nurse, I see firsthand how illness impacts children and their families. I see the fear, the exhaustion, the hope, the tiny victories, and the moments that break you open. I know what it means for a child to lose parts of their childhood to hospital rooms, treatments, and uncertainty. And I know how much support, joy, and relief organisations like Camp Quality bring to families who are navigating the hardest chapters of their lives.
This walk isn’t just kilometres on a tracker. It’s impact. It’s community. It’s giving kids the chance to laugh, play, connect, and feel like kids again — even in the middle of something as big and frightening as cancer.
So I’m walking with my uncle in my heart, and with every child I’ve cared for in my mind. I’m walking for their futures, their families, and the hope that we can make their journeys a little lighter.
