I’m fundraising to help Camp Quality
Short Story for Short Story People:
In 2022, my family had a life-changing experience with cancer. During that tough time, Camp Quality became a shining light, offering us moments of joy and connection when we needed it most. My family is forever grateful for the support they gave us, and now we want to give back.
So, to raise money for Camp Quality, I’m pledging to shave…
MY LEGS!!!!
From now until January 8th, my leg hairs will be allowed to grow wild and free. But on January 9th, they’re getting the chop.
There’s a bit more to this story (you can read the longer version below), but if you’re short on time, please consider supporting Camp Quality with a small donation—$5 would be amazing! Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, join me and pledge your legs too. The more hairy legs, the better!
Long Story Time:
In 2022, I was diagnosed with cancer. It was one of the most difficult times for my family and me. Amidst the fear and uncertainty, Camp Quality gave us some of our most precious memories.
Not long after my diagnosis, we were lucky enough to attend a Camp Quality event at Adventure World. At the time, I wasn’t working due to chemotherapy and couldn’t have afforded such a special day. Knowing my future was uncertain, creating fun memories with my kids became so important to me. That day, and others like it, gave us a much-needed escape from the hard, medical reality we were living in.
Over 16 months of chemotherapy, we attended several Camp Quality events, and each one brought so much joy. In fact, when I finished my first 5 months of chemo and found out I needed another 11 months, my kids were excited—not for more treatment, but for the chance to keep attending Camp Quality events. Kids, hey?
Camp Quality helps children facing cancer simply be kids again. Their programs and services are specially designed for children aged 0–15 who are dealing with their own diagnosis or that of a loved one, like a parent or sibling.
Why the Hairy Legs?
When my leg hair started growing back after chemo, I became a bit attached to it. (TMI, I know!) I couldn’t bring myself to shave it, deciding instead to save it for a special occasion. That occasion is now.
On January 8th, I’m finally getting my chemo port removed—a huge milestone—and it feels like the perfect time to kick off a new phase of my life: smooth-legged and celebrating Camp Quality. (Can’t promise how long the smooth legs will last, though!)
Camp Quality has been a lifeline for my family, and I want to help them keep bringing joy to kids affected by cancer.
Thank you for your support—it means the world to me!
With love,
Renee
