For our little warrior, maisie
Our Maisie is only 23 months old, yet she has already fought battles most of us could never imagine. The early days of parenthood should have been filled with firsts in our family home, and the joy of new beginnings dreaming of plans and adventures ahead. Instead, things quickly turned unimaginable, and our lives were changed forever. At just six weeks old, Maisie was diagnosed with a rare tumour thought to be benign. After multiple surgeries, endless hospital stays, scans, tests, chemotherapy cycles, and countless sleepless nights things weren’t going in the direction of cure.
We refused to give up. We did the research ourselves, reached out across the globe, and recently learned that Maisie’s tumour had been misdiagnosed - it was in fact a very rare, aggressive malignant cancer. Since then, she has endured more chemotherapy, an extensive life-changing surgery which she is still currently recovering from, and she will have more treatment and challenges ahead, no child should ever have to face.
The helplessness, the confusion, the daily fear; It truly is hard to simplify and put it all in words but through it all, Maisie has shown a strength and light that leave us in awe. Even on her hardest days, she finds a way to smile, to laugh, to remind us that hope is stronger than fear. She shows us that the little things we often stress over don’t really matter and that joy can exist even in the darkest places and the darkest days. She teaches us patience, resilience, and the power of presence. Right here, right now. Every hug, every giggle, every moment is worth more than anything else.
My sweet girl Maisie, I’m so sorry. How we wish we could do more. How we wish we could take it all away. How I wish my baby never had to miss a single experience, a single playdate, a single interaction - simple things like going to the park, running free, touching flowers, rolling around the grass, swimming, family gatherings or social settings without worrying about weakened immunity, hospital scars, and central lines. Childhood is meant to be lived in laughter, wonder, and adventure - not in hospital rooms and waiting halls. But yet, even in the midst of what she’s lost, she show us how much she’s gained - strength, resilience, and a spirit that still manages to shine brighter than anything we’ve ever known. I will spend every waking moment making sure you live a childhood and life you deserve.
On the heavy days, I will fill your bed with rainbows and tiny worlds of make-believe. We will always protect the magic of your imagination, letting it run wild and free. And in all the spaces in between, I’ll make sure you have every tool to simply be you. I will bring adventure to your side, and anything you dream up, I will find a way to bring to life.
When we’re down, we’re down - but we refuse to live in a world of somber. So you’ll find us dancing around with our butts in the air, laughing at the silliest things, sharing stories and sprinkling joy in places it shouldn’t even fit. Because no matter the weight of the day, colour and wonder will always belong to you.
Truthfully, we have always felt conscious about sharing Maisie’s story, worried it might bring the wrong kind of attention, all while wanting to protect the energy and light that surrounds her. But between our loneliest days and endless searching for answers, we’ve also found light - in meeting some of the most incredible families, fighters, and supporters. So we feel empowered to share now, in hopes it might bring awareness and more connection, comfort, or strength to others walking a similar path, and to remind anyone going through this that they are not alone.
Cancer is brutal, it’s relentless, treatments are toxic, and the funding for safer options is far too small. We can’t change what’s already happened, but we can raise awareness for Maisie and for every child like her - children who deserve more than just survival, they deserve joy.
We don’t want this chapter to define Maisie and it won’t; it is only a part of her story. She is so much more and there is no need to hide.
This September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re joining Camp Quality to raise funds - walking for Maisie and for every child living with cancer. Every step we take is for her, every kilometre is for the kids who deserve more.
Camp Quality is an Australian charity that helps kids facing cancer and their families make memories and find joy, even in the hardest times. Through camps, hospital programs, family support and special experiences, every donation helps give kids and families precious moments of fun, connection and hope.

I don’t know if the ache will ever go away but what I do know for sure is you Maisie, have changed our lives forever. Wise and brave beyond your years, no step in your journey has dimmed your spirit. Your ability to feel, love, and understand your emotions at such a high level baffles us daily. You sparkle wherever you are. Your incredible, loving heart and radiant light reach far beyond us, touching not only those who know your story, but everyone blessed to know you. I love you with all my heart and soul.
My other half, Pete - how blessed beyond words we are to have you. You have carried the unimaginable, even with your own story and heartbreak. You protect, you fight, and you never stop. Your tenacity through sleepless nights, discoveries, heartache, and gut-wrenching decisions no one should ever have to face, even when it all felt unbearable has meant she stands here today because of you. Maisie’s spirit shines because of the love you pour into us.
And together, our intuition has been powerful. It gave us the courage to speak up, to push harder, and I am so proud of that. We continue to live a life with restrictions but our alignment to live each day with no regrets, filled with laughter, silliness and love keeps me going. And most importantly Maisie feels that. It’s her whole being.
For Maisie, and for all the little warriors - we will never stop fighting. We f**king promise you that.
