Why I am walking this September
At the age of 4 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Throughout my journey I stayed in hospital for 140 nights and endured chemotherapy, many surgeries, radiation, a stem cell transplant and antibody therapy.
Luckily my family had a range of support from family and friends throughout these 15 months. During my stay in hospital I was first introduced to Camp Quality when the CQ puppets came to visit me.
After my treatment I attended my first CQ mini camp with my short curly hair and a big fear of face paint! The day was filled with lots of fun and activities and I have since gone to six CQ camps, and other family fun days.
Some of my favourite memories with Camp Quality are:
- The talent show and disco we had at every camp
- Going to ifly for my camp quality graduation camp
- Meeting people who have been on a similar cancer journey and I now have become good friends with
- Going with my brother on camps
Usually you would have a different companion for each camp however I was very lucky to be matched with the perfect companion. My companion Mel ended up being my companion for all 6 camps I attended which was truly amazing. Mel and all the other camp quality companions are volunteers and are there to put a smile on all the kids faces. I can truly not express how much joy and happiness I got from all my CQ experiences.
Camp Quality is a very unique and special cause close to my heart because it really does help kids and their families going though cancer treatment. I am really hopeful in the future that I can volunteer for CQ and help other kids like me.
To celebrate being over 10 years past my diagnosis, this September my goal is to walk 50km. I’m walking to raise funds for other families like mine who may have a brother, sister, mum or dad who have or are experiencing a diagnosis.
