08 Mar 2019

To see not only the towns we are travelling to but how we are going to getting there these route descriptions will give you further details into the directions we will drive:

Day 1: Wangaratta – Omeo – Sale

After starting in Wangaratta we head north east through Eldorado (we are in Mexico after all) and then Beechworth, Myrtleford and drop into the back of Bright via Mt Porepunkah. We then trade the dirt roads in for the Great Alpine Rd which we follow through Harrietville, Hotham and Dinner Plain before arriving at our lunch town - Omeo.

The afternoon is predominantly dirt and skirts the Vic High Country. We follow Mt Delusion Rd, Baldhead Rd and Alfred Rd all the way through to Sale in Gippsland Victoria. The drive is twisting dirt with spectacular views.

Day 2: Sale – Marysville – Bendigo

From Sale we head north west, firstly on Mt Selma Rd and then the popular Walhalla Rd. The drive to Marysville for lunch is just over 200km, but will take the better part of four hours as we wind our way up and over Mt Selma at 1400m above sea level.

After lunching at Marysville we traverse Black Range State Forest, Tallarook State Forest and One Eye State Forest on our way to Bendigo for the night.

Day 3: Bendigo – Dunkeld – Mount Gambier

We head south west out of Bendigo through Avoca before traversing Pyrenees State Forest and skirting the south east corner of the Grampians on our way to Dunkeld for lunch.

South west is the order of the day as we continue towards Mt Gambier by tracking around the back of Mt Napier and finally dropping onto the bank of the Glenelg River. We follow the river to the South Australian Border, set the clocks back 30 minutes and then cruise up into Mt Gambier for a well-earned rest!

Day 4: Mount Gambier

It’s a day off. Why not have a look at Mount Gambier’s famous Blue Lake, Umpherston Sinkhole, Coonawarra Wine Region, Centenary Tower or Tantanoola Caves.

Day 5: Mount Gambier – Keith – Renmark

After a nice rest in Mt G, we spend almost the entire day heading north, through Padthaway and passing famous motorcyclist, Andy Caldecott’s training track on our way to Keith.

After lunch we bisect the Ngarkat Conservation Park heading through Karte, Meribah and Yamba on our way to Renmark on the banks of the Murray River.

Day 6: Renmark – Murrayville – Horsham

After departing Renmark we scoot straight back into VIC taking Settlement Rd and Underbool Track deep into Murray-Sunset National Park. We burst out of the park just north of Murrayville our lunch venue.

After lunch we continue our journey south through a corridor between Wyperfield National Park and Big Desert National Park. We scoot around Nhill, pass right through Dimboola and stop overnight in Horsham.

Day 7: Horsham – Inglewood – Echuca

We depart Horsham heading south, following a really cool creek bed which provides a couple of crossings. We then cross the Grampians, popping out at Halls Gap. We then continue through Stawell, Kanya, Rostron and Emu before stopping for lunch at Inglewood.

The last arvo run is across flat farm land, driving in grids and performing lots of 90 degree turns. We pass through Rochester and drop into Echuca from the south finishing on the banks of the Mighty Murray River.
